Stretch mark is still a mystery to a lot of us. I am not a doctor and I doubt if doctors know exactly what causes them. The information I provide in this site are gathered from different resources, most of them, from customers and experiences.

I have come to the conclusion that stretch marks are caused by some kind of hormone activity. You don't have to be pregnant or fat or big to get them. As a matter of fact, it is a very common skin condition, but most people who have them are embarrassed by them and keep them to themselves, so they are less talked about or heard of.

The stretch marks related hormone activity mostly happens during

Pregnancy

Natural growth for adolescent boys and girls

Rapid weight gain/loss

Depression or extreme unhappiness (unhappy, stressed and depressed people are more likely to get stretch marks)

Long term lacking of certain nutrients

Sudden change in physical or environmental conditions.

What it does is probably sending or processing the wrong information relating with skin development, which causes skin to produce insufficient amount of collagen and Elastin- which forms the connective tissue of skin; when the connective tissue breaks apart, there are stretch marks. They start from deep skin tissue and gradually develop to skin surface. Although in many cases they seem to just appear overnight, there really is a process.

Stretch marks happen to men and women, fat and thin, young and old. In most cases they don't hurt or irritate so a lot of people don't even notice them until they get really bad. In the beginning stage they are pinkish red (caused by micro blood vessels breaking up and bleeding) or faint pale, later on mostly change to pale silvery white. If they expand, they can literally cover your whole body and 2 people told me that they got them on the face - can you imagine that?

Most people think that stretch marks are not curable. Indeed, they are very difficult to get rid of. For more than 10 years I could not do anything about them other than putting lotions on and watch them spread regardless. It was a very helpless situation. You would think with the medical achievement they have today, doctors should come up with some treatment already. But that's not the case. If you go see a doctor, most of them will tell you: just live with them, they are not curable.
But why? I think they just don't care enough, maybe in a doctor's eyes stretch marks are not real problems. They don't really cause physical discomfort. People might even think that you are shallow if you are bothered by them. But unless you have them, you would not know the damage.
